Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement on Veterans Day:
“Today we honor the courageous men and women who have selflessly placed their lives on the line in defense of the freedoms we cherish so dearly. The sacrifices service members and their families have made for our country can never be repaid, but together as a nation we can salute their service by working to ensure that veterans receive the care and support they have earned and deserve. I firmly believe that no veteran should ever face unemployment, homelessness or restricted access to high quality healthcare. That is why I will continue to advocate on their behalf. To that end, my office has created a “Veterans Resource Guide” to provide veterans with key information about federal, state and community-based programs that offer resources and support to veterans.
“As we recognize the millions of veterans who have served our country and continue to place themselves in harm’s way, may we never forget the courageous men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives for their country – courageous service members like Bill Nellis, of my hometown, Searchlight, Nevada.
“Bill Nellis was a fearless man who joined the United States Airforce at the age of twenty-six to defend the country he loved. He served gallantly in the Air Force, successfully completing sixty-eight different missions during World War II. Sadly, on his sixty-ninth mission, Bill paid the ultimate price for our protection. Although he was hit by ground fire while strafing a German convoy over Luxembourg, his sacrifice was not in vain. The mission undertaken by his squadron saved many lives and destroyed irreplaceable German vehicles, personnel and supplies. Bill’s service will live forever in our hearts. In Nevada, we expressed our deep gratitude to Bill Nellis and his family by naming the Las Vegas Airforce Base Nellis Air Force Base in his honor.
“I am proud to represent the hundreds of thousands of veterans in Nevada, who like Bill Nellis, serve our nation without reservation. I pledge my unrelenting support for their protection and well-being. Today, with heartfelt gratitude, I say to all of our nation’s veterans, thank you for your service.”
