Bolden was born in Henderson, Nevada on February 16, 1937. He graduated from Basic High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in engineering at California State University in San Jose. Bolden’s career began in 1959 when he joined the City of Las Vegas Police Department. He became a Sergeant in 1965 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1970. Bolden’s ascension through the ranks was challenged when he was accused of cheating on the Captain’s exam and forced to drop his name from the list of eligible candidates. Bolden challenged the accusation and presented his case to the Nevada State Supreme Court where he eventually won and was completely exonerated. Ultimately, Bolden rose to the rank of Deputy Chief of Uniform Field Services Division and then the Technical Services Division. In 1975, he graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ National Academy and a year later was founding member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (N.O.B.L.E.). After 33 years of service, Bolden retired in December 1991 and was recognized as the highest ranking African American police officer in Nevada. Larry Bolden passed away on April 1, 2000. |
